what is a reading or a blessing?

A reading or a blessing is where a VIP guest will read a pre-written poem or piece of literature that contributes to the depth of the day. Blessings are often delivered by elder members of the wedding guests, but not always. It can be beautiful to include blessings from children/step children as well.

Celtic Blessing

May you have,

Walls for the wind

And a roof for the rain,

And drinks bedside the fire

Laughter to cheer you

And those you love near you,

And all that your heart may desire

Celtic Blessing

May you be poor in misfortune,

Rich in blessings,

Slow to make enemies

And quick to make friends.

But rich or poor, quick or slow,

May you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

May you continue to have:

Enough love to give each other trust,

Enough trust to give each other faith,

Enough faith to give each other strength,

Enough strength to give each other courage,

Enough courage to give each other freedom,

And enough freedom to give each other love.

Irish Marriage Prayer

Names: May love and laughter light your days,

and warm your heart and home.

May good and faithful friends be yours,

Wherever you may roam.

May peace and plenty bless your world with joy that long endures.

May all of life’s passing seasons bring the best to you and yours

We will not wish you joy on this great day,

For joy is in your hearts and goes with you

Along the fragrant, mystic, sunlit way;

We will not wish you joy whilst love is new.

But this is our wish:

May you be strong enough

To shelter love, and keep it safe from harm,

When winds blow high, and roads are steep and rough,

May you protect your love, preserve its charm.

When days are dark, may love be your sure light.

When days are cold, may love be your right fire,

Your guiding star when hope is out of sight,

The essence and sun of your desire.

May love be with you through the flight of years,

Then after storms, there will always be calm.

Though you have cause for heartache and for tears,

Despair lasts not, when love is there for balm.

This be the prayer we breathe for you today:

When you have reached the summit of life’s hill,

May it be possible for you to say:

“Married long years, but we are lovers still”

_____ and ______ may you live lives of love and peace together and always remember your joy on this day.

May you be honest in your relationship, sharing the truth in kindness

and trust, so that your love may grow in maturity and depth.

May you be there for each other in times of grief or struggle, holding

each other close in comfort, drawing strength and courage from each other, and from those around you.

May your lives be full of laughter, lifting up the delights in life and humour in the harder times.

May your home be filled with joy, as it is joined with the lives of others,

and as you grow closer to each other in the shared journey of life.

And may each of us here this day be given new hope in the

commitment to love and be affirmed in our own love for others.

May your mornings bring you joy and your evenings bring peace.

May your troubles grow few as your blessings increase.

May the saddest day of your future

Be no worse than the happiest day of your past.

May your hands be forever clasped in friendship

And your hearts joined forever in love.

A Blessing for Marriage

As spring unfolds the dream of the earth

May you bring each other’s hearts to birth.

As the ocean finds calm in view of land,

May you love the gaze of each other’s mind.

As the wind arises free and wild,

May nothing negative control your lives.

As kindly as moonlight might search the dark,

So gentle may you be when light grows scarce.

As surprised as the silence that music opens,

May your words for each other be touched with reverence.

As warmly as the air draws in the light,

May you welcome each other’s every gift.

As elegant as dream absorbing the night,

May sleep find you clear of anger and hurt.

As twilight harvests all the day’s colour,

May love bring you home to each other.

Celtic Blessing - Unknown

May the strength of the wind and the light of the sun,

The softness of the rain and the mystery of the moon

reach you and fill you.

May beauty delight you and happiness uplift you,

May wonder fulfil you and love surround you.

May your step be steady and your arm be strong,

May your heart be peaceful and your word be true.

May you seek to learn, may you learn to live,

May you live to love, and may you love - always
