Locals’ guide to

Wanaka

Best coffee + Bagels: Curbside (Food trucks on Brownston Street)

French pastries: Pembroke Patisserie (Albert Town)

Sit down breakfast: Federal Diner or Kai Whakapai. People love Scroggin, but I don’t love it.

Takeaway lunch or dinner: Big Fig (They do a Meatless Monday menu, and their coffee is also great)

Pub grub and craft beer: B Social - local beers and surprisingly good food too.

Day after celebration: Hook

Restaurants for dinner: Muttonbird (yummy and down to earth), Bistro Gentil (French and best views!) or Kika (contemporary and won top 50 restaurants in the world).

Wedding dinner/elopement dinner recommendations: Bistro Gentil - tell them you’re getting married and to ask for a table with a view.

Short hike: Mt Iron. Budget 25-30 mins to the top. Great 360° views of Wanaka. Park in the parking area near the BP roundabout and return along the same track so you can see the lake along the way.

Long hike: Roy’s Peak, budget 5 hours return, leave early in the morning to avoid the heat, wear comfortable sneakers, pack a lunch and bring lots of water (no shade!)

Favourite mountain: We love Treble Cone because it has beautiful views of the lake, is closer, and less busy. Make sure you buy your pass the day before and save some money!

Rainy day activities:

  • Wanaka has two unique cinemas - Ruby’s is upmarket & Paradiso is funky & retro.

  • Puzzling World is a Wanaka icon!

  • The Transport & Toy Mueseum is quite mind blowing for all the old vehicles and aircraft they have on display

  • Maude Tasting Room is cosy and you can sample local wine with views of the lake
